What I Look for When Reviewing a Photographer's Website
When I review a photographer’s website I first imagine I’m a client looking for the basics: what do you shoot, what’s your experience level, and where are you located.
After that, I’m looking at the less obvious but very important elements that go into creating a great impression and converting visitors into clients:
Is there a clear visual style throughout the work?
Is the site easy to use and navigate?
Has this person invested in themselves through branding?
Is the work technically strong?
Is it consistent?
Are they establishing client trust by sharing who they’ve worked with?
Can I see more from them via a newsletter or Instagram?
Is there variety within their niche?
Is there a personality coming through?
Below are some specific things I look for while judging the effectiveness of a website:
1. Cohesiveness: The website should ideally open to an overview rather than diving straight into specific category pages. I'm looking for a consistent style that communicates the photographer's identity. Is the overall energy of the site bold and bright, or soft and subtle? This initial impression helps me understand who the photographer is.
2. Clear Navigation: Easy navigation is crucial. Are the categories clearly defined using industry-standard terminology? Is it straightforward to find the content I'm looking for? A well-structured menu can greatly enhance the user experience.
3. Intentional Branding: The website's design should feel unique rather than generic. Have I encountered the same look before? I'm on the lookout for distinctive branding elements that showcase the photographer's personality and professionalism. A missed opportunity for branding can lead to a less impactful presentation.
4. Experience Level: I appreciate when a website showcases a client list or provides insights into past collaborations. This transparency helps gauge the photographer's experience level. Additionally, I'm interested in whether there's a project breakdown that highlights their work for various clients and if the images demonstrate technical strength without visible errors.
5. Marketing: A strong marketing presence is vital. Does the website include a newsletter signup form to keep potential clients informed? How easily can I find links to their Instagram or social media? Ultimately, I want to feel inspired to explore more of their work and to see if the site effectively targets a specific audience.
6. Location: Lastly, please, for the love of all things creative, make sure your location is easily accessible on your site. It’s critical for potential clients to know where you’re based, as this can influence their decision to reach out.
By considering these aspects, I can form a clearer picture of the photographer's style, professionalism, and overall appeal. A strong visual identity will always be the most important for me, but small website elements can add up to a much more impactful first impression and lead to greater client outreach.
